Why Eating Less Might Be Holding You Back
Aug 04, 2026Why Eating Less Might Be Holding You Back
We’ve been told for years that “eating less” is the secret to health, energy, and results. But here’s the truth: under-eating can actually work against you, especially as a mum juggling life, fitness, and everything in between.
If you’ve been training hard, doing “everything right,” but still not seeing results, it might not be about your workouts at all. It could be about how much (or how little) you’re fuelling your body.
Signs You Might Be Under-Eating
Not sure if this applies to you? Here are some common red flags:
-
You’re constantly tired and can’t shake that mid-afternoon crash.
-
Cravings feel totally out of control.
-
You’re not building muscle, despite training regularly.
-
Your results have plateaued, even though you’re putting in the effort.
Sound familiar? You’re not alone — and you’re not “failing.” Your body is simply crying out for more fuel.
What Happens When You Don’t Eat Enough
When we restrict food, our bodies don’t respond with gratitude. They go into survival mode. Here’s what that looks like:
-
Metabolism slows down- your body holds onto fat instead of burning it.
-
Muscle breaks down- making it harder to get stronger.
-
Sugar cravings skyrocket- hello, 3pm chocolate attack.
-
Energy crashes- leaving you flat, foggy, and too drained to move.
This isn’t about discipline. It’s biology. Less food = less muscle. Less muscle = slower metabolism. And the cycle continues.
What Not to Do
If you’re feeling stuck, here’s what won’t help (but is often the first thing people try):
-
Skipping meals.
-
Relying on coffee to suppress hunger.
-
Cutting out entire food groups.
-
Training hard while fuelling light.
These approaches backfire every time, especially during perimenopause, when your body actually needs more support, not less.
What to Do Instead
The good news? You don’t have to overhaul your entire diet or follow a complicated plan. Start with these simple shifts:
✅ Eat protein at every meal.
✅ Don’t skip breakfast.
✅ Include carbs (yes, rice and bread too!).
✅ Snack smart to keep energy steady.
✅ Fuel your workouts, not just recover afterwards.
Remember: you don’t need to earn your food. Food is fuel, not a reward.
The Bottom Line
When you eat enough of the right foods, everything changes, your energy lifts, your mood steadies, your workouts feel better, and results start to flow.
You deserve to feel strong, energised, and confident in your body, and that starts with fuelling it well.
